The notoriously secretive communist state of North Korea has weighed in on next week’s referendum for an independent Scotland – and it would appear Kim Jong-Un is supporting the ‘Yes’ campaign.

Because of whiskey.

Speaking to the Telegraph from Japan, Choe Kwan-il, the editor of the pro-North Korean newspaper Choson Sinbo, said that Scotland’s tradition of whiskey distilling could lead to trade agreements with the isolated state.

“North Korea is rich in natural resources and we like the taste of Scotch whisky, so we can be beneficial to each other,” Mr Choe said.

The newspaper editor, who supports North Korea’s infamously authoritarian regime, also weighed in on the philosophical and political ideology behind a ‘Yes’ vote.

“I believe that every person has the right to be a member of an independent nation, to have sovereignty, to live in peaces, and to enjoy equality,” he mused.

Mr Choe’s support was matched by So Chung-On, who is the director of the International Affairs Bureau of Korean Residents of Japan.

“The result will be very important and if the Scots do vote to become independent, then North Korea will be prepared to respond to that,” he said.

Scotland goes to the polls next Thursday. Pyongyang awaits the outcome with baited breath.
