Garda whistleblower Sergeant Maurice McCabe has taken sick leave. It is understood he has been subjected to a number of incidents of alleged harassment in recent weeks.

Yesterday, the acting Garda Commissioner said senior managers within the force are fully supportive of Sergeant McCabe. Noirin O'Sullivan said gardaí want all members of the force to feel free to bring forward any issues they want to raise.

She said senior managers within the force are in regular contact with Mr. McCabe - a claim denied by independent TD, Finian McGrath.

Her comments follow reports that Mr. McCabe has been told he has "ruined" the force by blowing the whistle on alleged malpractice.

Commissioner O'Sullivan said senior officials have contacted Sergeant McCabe to discuss those reports with him.

But former whistleblower John Wilson told Newstalk Lunchtime he wants the acting Garda Commissioner to investigate the allegations at a more senior level.
