Interrupting lessons for a demonstration by local police might seem like a godsend to most kids, but that's not quite how it turned out for a class of Welsh schoolchildren last week.

On Wednesday, officers visited a school in the village of Gilfach to show off some of their equipment to a class of four to five year olds.

During the lesson, an unfortunate mix-up led to eight of the children being exposed to PAVA spray, which is based on chilli extract and used for riot control. The officer had intended to use a mock canister, but evidently mixed up the two.

According to the BBC, the children were treated but hospitalisation was not required.

Police later released a statement on the incident:

"Medical treatment wasn't required on the day, however, parents were advised to seek medical attention if they had any concerns.

"Further enquiries into the error are now being undertaken and, as a result of yesterday's incident, school liaison officers will no longer be taking any demonstration (mock) PAVA spray into schools."
