A report from the OECD this week indicated that Irish adults are not exactly top of the class when it comes to literacy and numeracy.
Of the 24 countries studied as part of the survey, Ireland ranks 17th when it comes to the literacy of our 16-65 year olds. Meanwhile when it comes to numeracy, we fare even worse, placing 19th out of 24.
Today on the Sunday show, Shane was joined by Mary McEvoy, Tony Donohoe, Head of Education Policy at IBEC and Deputy Mary Mitchell O’Connor, Fine Gael TD for Dun Laoghaire and member of the Oireachtas Committee on Jobs, Social Protection and Education.
The panel discussed the literacy and numeracy figures and what they could mean for the current and future workforce in Ireland, as well as opining on the kind of education system we need to produce well-rounded students.
