While many questionable methods have been used to smuggle rare and expensive goods across international borders, however three men in New Delhi caused a stir when they attempted to smuggle monkeys on board a plane by hiding them in their pants.

Indian customs became suspicious of the trio after spotting a bulge in one man’s underwear during a routine frisk at Delhi airport.

After further inspection it was discovered that two of the men had rare slender lorises concealed in a pouch hidden in their pants.

The three suspected smugglers, named as Hamad al-Dhaheri, Mohammed al-Shamsi and Rashid al-Shamsi, were heading to Dubai.

The nocturnal primates are native to India and Sri Lanka, measuring in 7 inches in length and weighed 150g.

Another loris abandoned by the group was found in a bin outside the airport.

‘On their direction another little monkey was recovered from a dustbin in the airport. They had abandoned him as they were unable to carry him,’ said one official.

The condition of the animals was described as ‘OK, but deteriorating‘.

They are currently being treated in hospital under the care of People For Animals, India’s largest animal welfare organisation.

All three men were arrested under India’s wildlife protection act.
