Back in 1977, ABC aired the mini-series adaptation of Alex Haley's novel Roots to huge success.

On the show's last episode, over 100 million people in the States alone.

Now, almost forty years later, we have the first trailer for a new adaptation, which is set to air on The History Channel, beginning on Monday May 30th.

Starring Forest Whitaker, Laurence Fishburne, Anika Noni Rose, Jonathan Rhys Meyers, Tip “T.I.” Harris, and Anna Paquin, as well as a cast of relative unknowns to fill out the ranks of the much-loved story.

The show will air for every night that week until Thursday June 2nd, resulting in an epic eight-hour retelling of the tale.

The History Channel president Paul Buccieri told Variety the following: “Roots will allow new audiences to experience this epic family saga with a new vision that is both inspiring and tremendously entertaining. We are proud that History will be able to bring new life to this powerful story that remains as important today as it did when the original Roots first premiered.”
