In the 13 years since Johnny Depp bagged his first Oscar nomination after pulling on an incredible set of dreadlocks and pulling off a comedic performance for the ages, it’s far to say that the film franchise that made Jack Sparrow a household name seemed dead in the water. The fun of the first one gave way to two plodding sequels to tie up a trilogy, with a fourth one you’d probably forgotten about tacked on for good measure. But having brought in more than $3.7bn at the box office, Disney is unburying Pirates of the Caribbean in the hope a fifth film will uncover even more treasure.
But given all the bad press the actor has weathered over the last year, including his very high-profile divorce from his ex-wife Amber Heard and the accusations of abuse their home, it’s perhaps not too surprising that the franchise’s lead has been scrubbed from the first teaser for Dead Men Tell no Tales. Instead, Norwegian directors Joachim Rønning and Espen Sandberg make the most of the film’s other star, Spanish actor Javier Bardem, picking up where his wife Penelope Crux left off last time.
With some signature swordplay and CGI looks, Bardem plays a surprisingly intense, yet undeniably polite, villain Captain Salazar. Take a look at him in action in the teaser below, with the film casting off in May next year.
