A new trailer for Christopher Nolan's upcoming World War 2 film Dunkirk has been released this Friday evening.

The film recounts the evacuation of Dunkirk, which saw hundreds of thousands of Allied soldiers rescued from France by a hastily organised naval fleet - which included many small civilian vessels.

The upcoming film boasts an impressive cast, including Tom Hardy, Cillian Murphy, Mark Rylance, Kenneth Branagh and even One Direction star Harry Styles.

It also marks a major step up in the career of Barry Keoghan - the young Irish actor best known for his infamous role in Love/Hate.

Dunkirk is Christopher Nolan's follow-up to 2014's Interstellar, and it's the director's second historical film (after the more fantastical drama of 2006's The Prestige).

As has become the rule with Nolan's work, this will be one well worth tracking down in the cinema. He is one of the most prominent proponents of the big-screen experience, and the film will be presented in IMAX, 70mm and 35mm film formats wherever possible.

Going by the evidence of the trailer's stunning widescreen cinematography and intense action sequences, it looks like Dunkirk will take full advantage of the cinema screen when it releases on July 21st.
