So it looks like America wasn’t with her, after all? If only the voters had paid closer attention to the last episode of the second season of Gilmore Girls, which aired first in May 2002, and which comes with the kind of sobering parallels to the 2016 presidential race not usually expected from Stars Hollow.

During the episode, ball-busting overachiever Paris Geller, played by Liza Weil, runs for Student Body President of Chilton, the preppy private school attended by Rory Gilmore. Geller sends her two loyal aides Madeline and Louise out to do some polling, asking the school body what they think of her candidacy. Despite being regarded as universally more capable of doing the job, likeability proves fatal.

“You mean people would rather vote for a moronic twink who they like over someone who could actually do the job?” Paris asks, steeped in incredulity. But hopes of a sex scandal couldn’t even derail Trump...
