The ultrasound is a life-changing experience for expectant mothers around the world, giving the first look at the new life coming into the world and developing in the womb. But for blind pregnant women, the experience may well be less profound.
The Brazilian arm of Huggies, one of the world’s biggest nappy producers, has just unveiled Meeting Murilo, showing how one modern technology can help bridge the gap for the vision-impaired.
Tatiana Guerra, 30, lost her sight at the age of 17, and now relies heavily on her other senses to experience the world to the fullest, particularly her sense of touch.
"If you could touch him, would that let you know what he's like?" her obstetrician asks during her routine ultrasound. When Tatiana says yes, he presents her with a 3D-printed rendering of her son so that Tatiana can touch it and use it to "meet" Murilo in a way she otherwise couldn't until he was born.
