Today is expected to be the hottest day of the year so far.

Met Éireann said temperatures could reach as high as 28C in some parts of the country this afternoon.

Forecaster Jean Byrne said the warm weather should continue across the weekend.

“Plenty of sunshine today and tomorrow, another dry day with good sunshine – probably a little bit hazier, there will be some high cloud at times,” she said.

“The temperatures will still be warm over the next few days right through the weekend. Into the low to, perhaps, mid-twenties – again they will be highest away from eastern and southern coasts.”

A bit more cloud over the weekend as well but there should be some good sunny intervals.

Ms Byrne said the highest temperatures will be in “parts of Ulster, Connaught, through the midlands and northern parts of Munster.”

She said an on-shore breeze will make things a little cooler on eastern and southern coasts.

She warned anyone out enjoying the sun to protect themselves – noting that the sun-burn index is high today.

The good weather could remain into next week, with models projecting warm, dry weather for the first few days.

Ms Byrne noted that it is still too early too make accurate predictions for the second half of the week, but said it currently looks like things will turn a bit cooler and more unsettled as the week goes on.
