Millions of Americans will vote today in one of the closest fought Presidential elections in decades.

The latest opinion polls give President Barack Obama a slight lead as he put his campaign to bed.

But his opponent Mitt Romney is planning to hold 2 more rallies in Ohio and Pennsylvania to try to win undecided voters.

Speaking in New Hampshire Mr Romney set out his credentials for the White House.

While speaking at a rally in Iowa President Obama highlighted successes in foreign policy.

 Romney-Obama tie in first vote

Traditionally the first place in America to vote is the village of Dixville Notch in New Hampshire.

The result there was a tie at 5 votes for each candidiate.

With the candidates running so close in opinion polls it looks like every vote will count today.

Political writer with the San Francisco Chronicle is Carla Marinucci.

She told Breakfast here on Newstalk that the campaigns are ready to fight it out on a legal front if necessary.
