Vigils and tributes held around the world in wake of Paris attacks

Vigils have been held outside French embassies around the globe, while there have been a number of other tributes paid to the victims of the attacks in Paris on Friday night. 

People have gathered to mark the tragedy around the world and pay tribute to the lives lost outside French embassies and cultural institutes. 

Vigils are taking place at the Spire in Dublin this afternoon, and at Spanish Arch in Galway.

Some attendees in Dublin know people affected by the attacks, with one woman still unsure of the whereabouts of several friends who were in the Bataclan theatre last night:

Books of Condolence are open at the Pro Cathedral in Dublin in solidarity with the victims of last night's attacks in Paris.

Archbishop of Dublin Diarmuid Martin lead a prayer service this morning. 

He called on people to join him in offering prayers for the victims today.

In Dublin, a black ribbon was tied to the French and European flags at the French Embassy in Merrion Square this morning.

Exchange students gathered in Union Square in New York and sang the French national anthem during a candlelight vigil, while similar gestures of solidarity and messages of mourning have been shared on social media.

At a number of sporting events, including the Boston Celtics' match and the US national team's game against St. Vincent and the Grenadines, a moment's silence was held for the victims.

The German national flag is set on half staff at the chancellery in Berlin as a mark of respect for the lives lost, while the flag was also at half-mast outside the embassy in Beijing.

On Friday night, a number of famous monuments and building from around the world also lit up in the colours of the French flag as a gesture of solidarity.
