A video posted on YouTube by non-profit group Hollaback! is getting people around the world talking about “street harassment.”
The video shows a woman walking silently around New York City for ten hours wearing jeans and a T-shirt. As she walks a hidden camera records every step and every word spoken to her by the people she passed.
Not only does the video show the verbal comments but in one instance a man walked silently beside her for a total of five minutes while trying to get her attention.
At the end of the video it’s revealed that “more than 100 instances of verbal street harassment took place during the 10 hours of shooting.” The filmmaker wrote that the harassment happened across a diverse spectrum of neighbourhoods throughout the city.
“This doesn’t include the countless winks, whistles, etc,” they added and then asked the viewer to donate to the non-profit group Hollaback!.
Women across the world are now being called on by Hollaback! to record incidents of street harassment and share them publicly to bring awareness to the issue, but also to try help prevent it from happening.
“We envision a world where street harassment is not tolerated and where we all enjoy equal access to public spaces,” the organisation writes on its website.
