Parenting is tough work at the best of times, but sometimes you hear of parents so dedicated to their child's happiness that it is nothing short of inspiring.

Advocate reports on the story of five year-old Rylan from San Diego, California. Born to parents Hillary and Jeff Whittington, Rylan was declared female at birth but has since identified as a boy.

Though the couple initially believed that it was just a phase, Rylan showed no signs of changing. After doing some research into child psychology, they came to the conclusion that he was transgender.

Worried that he might become ashamed of his identity, they ensured that every effort was made to accommodate it - his hair was cut, his room was redecorated and his wardrobe was filled with boys clothes. And of course, this made Rylan an incredibly happy child!
