Magazine publishers in 2013 still offer those willing to subscribe a range of discounts and bonuses, but they're nothing compared to the generous gadgets offered by Time during the mid-80s.

Recently re-compiled and analysed by Time themselves, the TV advertisements try to persuade viewers to sign-up for a subscription by tempting them with a range of 'high-tech' bonuses. Particularly attractive offers include the "phone file" - a combination of address book and phone that is an obvious predecessor to the smartphone - and a "micro headset radio".

As a bonus for us modern observers, the ads also offer a glimpse at a selection of retro Time covers, as well as providing us with various insights into what celebrities were considered a marketable proposition in 1985. Keep an eye out for everyone from Michael Jackson to Pope John Paul II, and Fidel Castro to Princess Diana. All that, and a catchy theme tune to boot.
