As scientists continue to discover more about Mars through their various unmanned missions to the planet, it has become clear it experienced a long journey from a planet not too dissimilar to Earth to the dusty red one we're familiar with today. In the video below, the team at NASA Goddard has created a powerful computer 'timelapse' of the planet over a timescale of 4 billion years. 

They describe the video by explaining that "rapidly moving clouds suggest the passage of time, and the shift from a warm and wet to a cold and dry climate is shown as the animation progresses. The lakes dry up, while the atmosphere gradually transitions from Earthlike blue skies to the dusty pink and tan hues seen on Mars today."

The video begins with a shot of an ancient Martian lake, before concluding in the atmosphere of the planet with the image of a modern Mars explorer. You can watch it below:
