Russian homophobic vigilantes are using a popular social network to entrap and torture young gay men, an Eastern European LGBT advocacy group is reporting.

The campaign is being led by a Russian extremeist known by the nickname "Cleaver".

The Spectrum Human Rights Alliance said 500 groups have been created on the Russian social network VK.com with the aim of mobilising homophobic vigilantes in every Russian city.

The groups place false same-sex personal advertisements on the website and capture and torture young men who answer them. As seen in the video one alleged 15-year-old boy is laughed at and physically attacked in broad daylight.

The Spectrum Human Rights Alliance claims that video recordings of these activities are freely distributed on the internet in order to make the identities of the victims known to their respective families, friends and schools.

Russian police have taken no action against the movement.

The founder of VK.com is yet to comment.

Last month Russian president Vladimir Putin signed into law a controversial bill which imposes a 5,000 rubles (€115) fine on anyone who promotes "non-traditional sexual setups" to children which could lead to a "distorted understanding" that gays are "socially equivalent" to heterosexuals.

The fine can increase to 200,000 rubles (€4,600) if the offender promotes homosexuality using the internet.

Brian Sheehan, Director of the Gay and Lesbian Equality Network told Newstalk the crimes are "alarming," and that by signing in the law Putin has "given license for hate mobs to target LGBT people".
