Animal rights activist Laura Jane Dalton locked herself in a car this morning to demonstrate the dangers of leaving dogs and other animals in cars during this stint of hot weather.
Before the ordeal Laura said: “Dogs can suffer from heatstroke and die in a matter of minutes when left in a car on a warm day. I’ll gladly bare my skin and lock myself into a hot car if it means people will think twice before leaving their animals unattended in cars during the summer heat.”
The Animal Rights Action Network (ARAN), the group behind the stunt, say that on a summer's day the temperature inside a shaded car can climb to more than 35 degrees. They say they receive reports every year that dogs left behind in parked cars have suffocated and died.
"ARAN encourages anyone who sees an animal locked in a car on a hot day to take down the car's color, model, make, and license plate number and then have the owner paged in the nearest buildings, or call the Gardai," the group recommends.
