It's not every day that a band as big as Metallica play a small gig for around 100 people. But it's actually completely unheard of that a band as big as Metallica would play a small gig for around 100 people... in Antarctica.

In what could easily be the most unusual concert of the year, Metallica headlined a small dome in Antarctica yesterday, performing an hour or so of their hits for the gathered researchers and contest winners. The event was organised and sponsored by Coca-Cola Zero in South America, and was dubbed 'Freeze 'Em All' - a pun on the band's debut album title Kill 'Em All.

Following guidelines to protect the Antarctic environment, the concert was not amplified, with the attendees instead able to hear the songs through specially calibrated headphones. Even without being able to turn their amps up to eleven, the band stormed through many of their most familiar songs, including One, Nothing Else Matters and Enter Sandman.
