The mere hint of an appearance by Daft Punk is enough to whip many music fans into a frenzy these days. So understandably some of the people watching Arcade Fire at the Coachella music festival got excited when two performers in familiar robot suits appeared on stage for a surprise performance of their song Get Lucky.

Unfortunately, it seems as if the whole thing might have been an elaborate gag. The 'robots' played a drastically slowed down version of the dance hit, and didn't appear to be doing anything 'live' other than unconvincingly hitting the occasional random button. They also weren't the same height as the genuine Daft Punk members, according to Conequence of Sound. As if to confirm suspicions, Arcade Fire frontman Win Butler later referred to the performers as 'Phat Dunk',

Of course, the whole thing could have been an even more elaborate double gag to obscure Phat Dunk's true identities, but it seems as if it was indeed a pair of imposters on the California stage. It worked, anyway: many Twitter uses took to the social network to announce they'd just seen Daft Punk live, while other observers were quick to call out the 'lie'.

Above all, it makes for a fun and suitably surreal YouTube video:
