A Turkish newspaper have published remarkable video and photos of what is alleged to be Turkish state intelligence services smuggling huge loads of weaponry across the border to Syria.

The video shows soldiers and police officers opening containers on the trucks containing what the newspaper, Cumhuriyetm, alleges are weapons and ammunition. The paper alleges the weapons were hidden beneath stashes of medicine, the BBC reports.

The Turkish government has strongly denied the allegations that it is arming rebels in Syria and has instead said there is an attempt to bring down the government involving security officials, prosecutors and soldiers.

Four prosecutors and 30 soldiers are now facing charges including military espionage and attempting to overthrow the government.

The newspaper is now also being investigated by Turkish officials, on suspicion of breaching terrorism laws.

The convoy is alleged to have been carrying 1000 mortar shells, 80,000 rounds of ammunition and hundreds of grenade launchers.

Reuters reports that witnesses and prosecutors have alleged Turkish officials helped deliver arms to areas of Syria that were controlled by Islamic militants in late 2013 and 2014.
