Efforts to end the US debt ceiling showdown in the US have collapsed.

Republican House Speaker John Boehner's team unveiled two paths out of the crisis last night but neither got the support needed from within his own party.

The plan comes 15 days into a government shutdown, and little more than 24 hours before the United States hits a deadline when it will start running out of funds to pay its bills.

America's triple A credit rating could be downgraded if that happens. Credit agency Fitch has put the US on a negative credit watch in anticipation of default.

The US must raise its nearly $17 trillion dollar debt limit by tomorrow to avoid default.
