A court in the United States has rejected a legal challenge by a property developer against the former Anglo Irish Bank, and has refused to lift temporary court protection for the bank.

The court in state of Delaware has also rejected applications by two US funds for documents relating to the government decision to liquidate the Irish Bank Resolution Corporation (IBRC) - formerly known as Anglo.

The liquidators for IBRC are seeking Chapter 15 bankruptcy in the US and property developer John Flynn is challenging that.

The current status means the bank is protected from any legal action in the US and that around €1 billion of its assets there are safe.

It is hoped the more they can retain of that money, the more money will be recouped for taxpayers and possibly go towards paying off some of its bank bailout - which mow stands at €29 billion.

Washington Correspondent with the Irish Times is Simon Carswell. He told Breakfast here on Newstalk that the outcome yesterday was a win for IBRC and ultimately the Irish taxpayer who bailed out the bank.
