World Book Day. Getting school kids to dress up as their favourite fictional character sounds like a fool-proof idea. What could possibly go wrong?
Well, Frozen is a film not a book but that looks like a minor glitch compared to Liam Scholes[11] and his mum Nicola who happens to work as a teacher.
The premise behind dressing up as a character goes back to the idea that you have read the book.
So has Nicola allowed lovely Liam read the book? In the interviews the dynamic duo have given this morning, that question was never posed. Nicola thought it would be.
A bit of a larf.
And, anyway, it’s a secondary school and her Liam is a great child actor who understands acting isn’t real.
Your child is 11.
As both a mother and a teacher, you should understand that childhood is being sexualized. Should an 11-year-old even know what a leather mask is? Wider society may be talking about it but should an 11-year-old be included in that conversation?
At best, it was an ill-judged ‘prank’ by a mother who tried to be different.
Who am I kidding? It was a crass stunt that lacked any understanding of world book day and the importance of reading to children. Pop culture gone mad.
The fact that Nicola was a teacher makes it worse. Is Fifty Shades correct reading material for 11-year-olds?
I actually do not need to ask that.
