Two UN peacekeepers have been wounded by mortar bombs launched from Syria into the Golan Heights.

A military spokeswoman says the peacekeepers were taken for treatment to an Israeli hospital and that there are no details on their condition or nationality.

The bombs appeared to be stray fire from fighting in Syria.

Defence Minister Simon Coveney says he is "concerned at the recent incidents" and is monitoring the situation carefully.

Minister Coveney said, “I am fully aware that peacekeeping operations are not without risk, however the safety of our troops is my priority. I am concerned at the recent incidents and will continue to monitor developments in the region”.

"The UN provides regular updates on the mission to the Security Council. The presence of the UNDOF mission remains an important element in ensuring stability on the Golan Heights and in the Middle East region,” he added.

Current Irish contingent, the 46th Infantry Group, is based at the UNDOF Headquarters in Camp Ziouani in the Golan Heights.
