GOAL has announced that two members of the charity's Syrian staff have suffered serious injuries following an airstrike in the north of the country.

One of the individuals is in a critical condition, while it is said that the other will require extensive reconstructive surgery following the attack.

A third staff member sustained injuries that are not believed to be life-threatening.

Today's attack comes as an international pledging conference for Syria is due to be held in Kuwait on Tuesday.

Barry Andrews, GOAL CEO, says, "our thoughts and sympathies are with the families and friends of our colleagues. We will do everything we can to support them, and all our Syria programme staff, with whatever they need over the coming days and weeks.

"This incident once again underlines the acute dangers that humanitarian aid workers face by working inside Syria. They are putting themselves in harm's way each day in order to deliver critical aid like food and water to some of the people most affected by the conflict.

"The current level of violence in Syria is a blight on humanity and it is shameful how little energy and resolve is being applied to bringing the conflict to an end," he added.

Mr Andrews explained that one of the injured workers is in a critical condition:
