Two people have died on our countries roads in separate crashes in the past 24 hours as nationwide safety campaign 'Operation Slow Down' comes to a close.

Gardaí are investigating a collision which claimed the life of a 28-year-old man in Roscommon in the early hours of this morning.

At around 1.20am, the driver of a jeep was fatally injured when he struck a car and crashed into a field at Coolteige Cross, hitting a concrete fence.

The 23-year-old male driver of the car and his 32-year-old female passenger were uninjured.

Separately, a man was killed in an incident in Co Clare this afternoon. It happened on the Loughville to Inch Road, just off the Ennis to Ennistymon Road, at 12:10pm.

A woman in her 70s who was also in the car has been taken to University Hospital Limerick, where her condition is described as stable.

Gardaí in Ennis are appealing for anyone who may have witnessed the crash to contact them.
