A man and a woman have died following crashes in Kilkenny and Cork.

The man in his 40s died after the van he was driving hit a tree on the R705 between Goresbridge and Bagenalstown in Co Kilkenny in the early hours of this morning.

He was taken to St Luke's Hospital where he was later pronounced dead.

The road remains partially closed for a technical examination but is expected to reopen this morning.

Gardaí are appealing for witnesses to contact Thomastown Garda Station on 056-775-4150, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800-666-111 or any Garda station.

They're particularly looking to speak to any road users with camera footage who were travelling the road between Goresbridge and Bagenalstown between 12 am and 1 am this morning.

Separately, a woman in her 70s died after she was struck by a car on the R580 Kanturk to Buttevant Road in Co Cork at around 7 pm yesterday evening.

She was pronounced dead at the scene and her body was taken to Cork University Hospital.

Anyone with information about the crash is being asked to contact gardaí in Mallow on 022 31450 or the Garda Confidential Line.
