Turkey’s Customs and Trade Ministry has fined a state-owned company for "insulting" ayran, a popular yoghurt-based drink in an ad for iced tea.
Çaykur has been ordered to pay 220,000 Turkish Liras (€70,250), and has had its ads for beverage Didi halted.
According to Hurriyet, a Turkish rapper named Ceza appeared in the ad, saying: "I’ve tried Ayran, it makes me sleepy."
A statement from the ministry says Çaykur “insulted [ayran] without reason and consumers were given a wrong message aimed at decreasing the consumption of ayran.”
The frothy, salted drink is ubiquitous in Turkey, and was declared the country's national drink in 2013 by President Recep Tayyip ErdoÄŸan.
