The Turkish military says that its warplanes have shot down an unidentified drone in Turkish air space.

It is suspected the drone may be a Russian drone.

The incident happened near the Syrian border.

It comes after an Afghan man was shot dead earlier by officials on the Bulgarian border with Turkey earlier today.

Reuters reports that the Turkish military gave three warnings to the aircraft before shooting it down, as per the rules of engagement. Turkish TV reports say the drone was 3km inside Turkish airspace when shot down.

“It’s a drone. We are trying to identify its nationality,” a senior Turkish government official said.

US officials have said they suspect it was a Russian drone.

Reuters reports that Russian authorities said all of its planes in Syria had returned safely and its drones were operating "as planned".

The Syrian conflict means NATO and Russian jets are sharing the same airspace for the first time since World War Two.
