There have been emotional scenes at Dublin Airport on the return of Team Ireland from the London 2012 Olympic Games.

The athletes were reunited with their family members and friends shortly after 2pm this afternoon.

Team Ireland secured 5 medals at the London 2012 games.

That is the best performance since the Melbourne games back in 1956.

Among those welcoming the team home was their Chef de mission Sonia O’Sullivan.

She says the team spirit was at the core of their success.

Minister of State for Sport Michael Ring was also in attendance.

He gave a rousing speech for the athletes and among other things called for more sports funding.
