A 9-year-old girl has died in the US after a strong gust of wind picked up the trampoline she was sitting on and sent it flying more than 150 feet.

Oaklee Sidwell had been playing with friends in her backyard in the small southern Utah town of Panguitch, Garfield County sheriff's officials said.

She was the last one sitting on the large trampoline and was putting on her shoes when the sudden gust lifted it off the ground. The girl fell off the trampoline at some point before it came to rest.

She was taken to a local hospital and later flown to a Salt Lake City hospital where she died last Wednesday from multiple injuries.

The incident happened in the state of Utah

Sheriff's spokeswoman Cheryl Church said the trampoline was properly assembled, was anchored to the ground and had a safety net. She described it as a tragic, freak accident that has affected the entire county.

Oaklee's obituary said she brought a special spirit with her wherever she went.

"Oaklee was here with us for nine wonderful years and was so full of life" the obituary read. "She lived it to the fullest and shared her happiness with everyone around her."

A bank account for her parents, Tracy and Desiree Sidwell, and her two brothers has been set up in Oaklee's name.
