A tourist guide has been killed by a lion in the park which was home to Cecil, the animal killed by a hunter last month.

Quinn Swales was on a walking safari with six foreign tourists in Zimbabwe's Hwange park when he was attacked by a male lion wearing a GPS collar.

The guide had spotted tracks and decided to follow a pride of lions consisting of two females, two cubs and two males, the park owners said.

The lion - named Nxaha - jumped out at Mr Swales, the Zimbabwe Parks and Wildlife Management Authority (ZPWMA) said.

"All efforts to save Quinn were in vain," a statement said.

Police are investigating the case. It was not immediately clear whether Mr Swales was armed. None of the tourists was injured.

Cases of people killed by wild animals in and around Zimbabwe's national parks often go unreported.

Lions that have killed humans have been shot in the past.

ZPWMA spokeswoman Caroline Washaya-Moyo said no decision had been made on whether Nxaha should be shot or not.

Last month's killing of Cecil, a 13-year-old rare black-maned lion, by American hunter Walter Palmer was met with global outrage.

Zimbabwe has charged two men in connection with the killing of Cecil. Zimbabwe wants Palmer, 55, extradited from the United States to face trial.
