"Massive victory for anti-water charges movement" after reports only 43% of households have paid

Anti-Austerity Alliance TD Paul Murphy has hailed a 'massive victory' for the anti-water charges movement after reports that less than half of households have paid their first water bills.

The Taoiseach had earlier announced that Irish Water would be revealing payment numbers tomorrow. However The Irish Times has reported this evening that only 43% of households have paid - or 675,000 out of 1.5 million.

A young boy who was found unconscious in a swimming pool at a Cork hotel yesterday has died.

The boy (3) has been named locally as Ronan Kennedy from Templederry in Co Tipperary.

European Commission has approved IAG's takeover of Aer Lingus, subject to conditions

The European Commission has approved IAG's proposed acquisition of Aer Lingus.

The EC cleared the proposal under EU Merger Regulation.

The Commission had raised concerns the merger would have led to insufficient competition on a number of routes, as well as preventing 'Aer Lingus from continuing to provide traffic to the long-haul flights of competing airlines on several routes'.

However the Commission's received assurances that air passengers will continue to have a choice of airlines at competitive prices.
