Three charities have come together to improve awareness of men's cancers for Blue September.

The campaign says that men's cancers are poorly funded, particularly when compared to women's cancers, in terms of research and support.

Cancer rates are higher in men, with one in three men being diagnosed with cancer in their lifetime. This compares to one in four in women.

The World Health Organisation (WHO) predicts that cancer cases will increase by 70% in the next two decades.

However the survival rate for testicular cancer has increased dramatically in recent years to over 95% - due to increased awareness and better treatment options.

91.5% of all cases of testicular cancer are in men aged under 50 years of age.

David Galvin is a consultant urologist at the Mater and St Vincent's hospitals.
