3,000 volunteers are taking to the streets of Ireland collecting for Special Olympics. Fundraisers have a target of €500,000 for the Collection Day this year'.

Donations will go towards Irish athletes abroad and the games in Limerick in June.

Matt English is the Chief Executive of Special Olympics Ireland. He has thanked the volunteers working today - and everyone behind the scenes all year round.

While Newstalk's Jonathan Healy was on-hand to introduce athletes and others involved in Special Olympics Ireland at a fundraising breakfast earlier.

Tyrone manager and Special Olympics ambassador Mickey Harte told Newstalk Breakfast the organisation gives us all a lift.

Special Olympics Ireland provides year-round sporting opportunities for more than 9,361 adults and children with intellectual disabilities in 385 clubs throughout the island of Ireland.
