There's been an increase of nearly 11% in the number of HSE senior managers despite the fact that there have been cuts in the number of support staff and nurses.

According to figures released to the Irish Times under Freedom of Information laws, there were 273 in the system in 2011.

This year, 303 people are in positions classed as 'Grade 8' or above, an jump of 10 point 9%.

The number of middle management personnel also rose for the period.

The HSE provided the figures in an internal report to a government committee that monitors the health service. They stated that the reason for the rise in numbers of management was due to “regularisation process”.

The vast number of the increase had taken place last year and this year, according to the report, although the HSE claims the number of managers is not excessive.
