FIFA confirm written-off loan of $5m to FAI

Football's world governing body's moved to clarify confirmation of a payment to the FAI following the Thierry Henry handball incident.

A statement from FIFA confirmed a loan of $5m in 2010 to fund the building of a stadium. The loan was only to be reimbursed if Ireland qualified for the next World Cup in 2014. As they did not, the loan was written-off on December 31 2014.

Greece will not meet tomorrow's deadline

Instead it will bundle all of the June payments with a view to handing over €1.6bn at the end of the month.

In a statement released this evening, IMF Chief Spokesman Gerry Rice, said 'the Greek authorities have informed the Fund that they plan to bundle the country’s four June payments into one, which is now due on the 30th of June.'

Taoiseach criticises opposition 'hysteria' over IBRC

The Taoiseach has broken his silence over the controversy surrounding the former Anglo Irish Bank by criticising the 'hysteria' from opposition members about recalling the Dáil to discuss the matter.

Enda Kenny says the plans by government for a Commission of Investigation into IBRC are 'right and proper' - and he does not regret not calling for a full inquiry when the SiteServ controversy arose in April.

He has welcomed the High Court ruling earlier this week which allows media outlets to report Catherine Murphy's comments to the Dáil about businessman Denis O'Brien's relationship with IBRC.

If successful the scheme could be rolled out in other parts of the country.

Five espressos a day poses no health risk, says EU study

According to a new review into the safety of caffeine, drinking up to five espressos a day causes no risk to the general public.

The study was carried out by the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) after concerns were raised by EU countries over the health risks of caffeine on the heart, central nervous system, and foetal development.
