Pope Francis has had an action-packed day since his red carpet reception at Dublin Airport.
The Pontiff’s plane, ‘Shepherd One’ took off from Rome just before 8am and touched down in Ireland just before 10:30am.
He was greeted by the Tánaiste Simon Coveney and his family at the airport before being whisked away to meet President Michael D Higgins at Áras an Uachtaráin.
After a private meeting with the Taoiseach at Dublin Castle, he made his much anticipated speech in which he said clerical child sex abuse is a “source of pain and shame” for the Church.
The Pontiff got on-board the Popemobile to travel through Dublin city Centre on his way to St Mary’s Pro Cathedral where he discussed the importance of family with the gathered worshippers.
At the Capuchin Day Centre in Dublin he met with a number of homeless families - before continuing on to Croke Park, where he celebrated the Festival of Families event.
In the evening, the Pope met with eight survivors of clerical, religious and institutional abuse.
He spent an hour and a half with the survivors at the Papal Nuncio's residence in Dublin.
He told them that those involved in corruption and cover up in the church are ‘filth.’
The Pope apologised for what happened at Mother and Baby homes around the country – and indicated that he would say more on the issue on Sunday.
