On the day after a massive step forward for gay rights in Ireland, the Sunday Show's panel sat down to discuss the biggest stories from today's papers.
Joining host Shane Coleman were Irish Times journalist Bernice Harrison, writer and law academic Larry Donnelly and The Independent's Ailish O'Hora.
Today's papers have been reflecting on many of the issues surrounding Friday's big referendum - the Yes and No campaigns, the youth turnout, and the support shown in rural areas.
Ailish rejected the idea that the campaign was bitter - especially when compared to previous referenda like those on abortion and divorce. She also said that both campaigns were largely making the same arguments throughout - leading to 'referendumitis.'
As an American and sometime writer for East Coast publications, Larry Donnelly says the US take on the referendum was a matter of whether 'Catholic Ireland is dead and gone.'
The youth vote was immensely influential during the campaign - through social media, the USI and campaigns to encourage recent emigrants to return to cast their vote. Ailish says that politicos will have to think long and hard about how to appeal to these new voters.
While Shane predicts some cringey efforts from politicians to be 'down with the kids,' Bernice is more skeptical about the youth vote transferring to next year's general elections. Larry says it might push opposition parties into proposing voting rights for emigrants who at present are disenfranchised from the political process.
The panel also discussed the ill-fated Age referendum, which Shane says was 'rightly defeated.' Ailish noted that even the strong youth vote appeared to be against it - a clear sign that everyone had more urgent priorities.
