The Paris city council has approved a motion to take a lawsuit against Fox News for incorrectly reporting that there are “no-go zones” in the city where non-Muslims are not welcome.
The report came in the wake of the Charlie Hebdo attacks.
A lawyer for the station has called the case "antithetical to free speech."
The Fox coverage quickly went viral after it originally aired.
The city's mayor Anne Hidalgo is one of the main supporters of the suit - she thinks that the inaccurate reporting has damaged the city's reputation - saying that the "honor of Paris" has been compromised.
She told the French media: "I’ve received a lot of encouragements from Americans to try to make this kind of nonsense stop."
The station previously appologised for airing claims that labelled the whole city of Birmingham a no-go area for non-Muslims.
The vote to take action was not unanimous - one councilor said that Fox News is a "blooper factory" and that the city should rise above its reporting.
Another suggested that the city should invite Fox journalists to tour the city.
Mayor Hidalgo responded: "I personally don’t think it’s funny," adding, "I’m not going to hit the bars with Fox News journalists, even the nicest ones."
The idea of no-go zones for non-Muslims was a running theme in Fox News' coverage of the Paris attacks.
A lawyer working for the station issued a statement that said: "Fox News will invoke every protection afforded [to] it under all applicable laws."
The station previously outraged the residents of Amsterdam when it claimed that the city is an "open cesspool of corruption."
