Tributes paid to former broadcaster Bill O'Herlihy, who has died aged 76
Former RTÉ sports broadcaster Bill O'Herlihy has died at the age of 76.
He retired last year after 49 years on air - including covering 10 World Cups and 10 Olympic Games.
O'Herlihy (76) became a journalist at 16, writing for the Cork Examiner. His first broadcast for RTÉ was a piece a commemorating the sinking of the Lusitania off the Cork coast for Newsbeat in 1965.
First same-sex marriages could happen in August
Irelands’ first same-sex marriages could happen in August – earlier than was originally expected.
The Minister for Justice and Equality, Frances Fitzgerald, has said today that she intends to have the bill enacted by the end of July.
“I am very conscious that many couples will want to get married as soon as possible. I am working to make that happen,” Ms Fitzgerald said.
Senator Averil Power announces resignation from Fianna Fáil
Senator Averil Power has announced her resignation from Fianna Fáil.
She says the party's approach to the same-sex marriage referendum was the 'final straw' and has hit out at Micheál Martin as 'a leader without followers'.
She says Fianna Fáil as a whole lacks courage, commitment and conviction, and she does not see that changing, even with a different leader.
In a statement on the plinth in Leinster House this afternoon, Senator Power said she will continue on as an independent senator.
Peter Robinson admitted to hospital after suspected heart attack
Northern Ireland's First Minister Peter Robinson has been admitted to hospital after a suspected heart attack.
He was taken in just after 9am this morning.
Sky News Ireland Correspondent David Blevins said: "Sources close to the party are telling us that he has been receiving treatment for a heart condition and that's what's caused this problem.
Mairia Cahill says her family is seeking legal advice following claims by Gerry Adams
Mairia Cahill says her family is taking legal advice after Sinn Féin leader Gerry Adams claimed she was abused by her uncle.
The 33-year-old says she was raped by a prominent member of the IRA when she was 16.
Ms Cahill says her abuser was an uncle through marriage - and some of her 12 blood-relative uncles are seeking legal advice after Mr Adams' comments during a radio interview at the weekend.
Speaking on Newstalk Lunchtime today, she called on the Sinn Féin leader "to put up, or shut up", and she says she would like Mr Adams to join her for a debate on the 'finer points' of the case.
