The Finance Minister Michael Noonan has not ruled out imposing a levy on banks who refuse to cut their mortgage interest rates.
He says he will spend the coming days examining a review conducted by the Central Bank of rates being charged - ahead of meeting the main lenders next week.

Letters sent by Prince Charles to government ministers have finally been made public after a 10-year legal battle to stop them remaining secret.
The correspondence - known as the "black spider" memos because of the heir to the throne's distinctive handwriting - were sent to several government ministers between September 2004 and March 2005.

The Health Minister Leo Varadkar says a full inquiry by HIQA into maternity services at Cavan General Hospital is not warranted and a medical review is underway.
It comes after a baby died at the hospital yesterday - bringing to four the number of infants to die at there over a 30-month period.

The High Court has heard Denis O'Brien is trying to stop RTÉ reporting on his loan arrangements with IBRC 'as a matter of principle'.
The businessman also believes revealing confidential details of his loan facilities with the State-owned bank will damage him commercially.
