Broadcaster Sir Terry Wogan has pulled out of presenting Children In Need, citing health reasons, says the BBC.

The 77-year-old will miss the event, which he described as "wonderful" and "inspiring", for the first time since it began in 1980.

In a statement he said: "The British public, as always, will dig deep in their pockets and purses to help the country's disadvantaged children, knowing that every penny will go to those who need it most.

"I'm going to miss our wonderful, inspiring evening together, but I'll be with you, watching, cheering and donating to a magnificent cause."

The BBC says a replacement host to join Tess Daly, Rochelle Humes, Nick Grimshaw and Fearne Cotton on Friday night will be announced in due course.

The announcement comes less than two weeks after Sir Terry was photographed arriving at a gala lunch for the charity fundraiser in London.
