A teenager has been transferred to Temple Street Children's Hospital after being rescued from the River Shannon in Athlone this evening.

The 14-year-old got into difficulty when swimming with friends at about 5.45pm this evening.

He was rescued by members of Athlone Sub Aqua Club, who were on the water on routine training.

The teen was rushed to Portiuncula Hospital, Ballinasloe. However he has since been moved to the Dublin hospital, where his condition is described as critical.
