A young man in his late teens remains in a critical condition this morning following yesterday's single car crash in County Carlow.

A 16-year-old boy was killed when the car he was driving crashed into a wall near Borris at around 5am.

Eamon Kavanagh, from Myshall in County Carlow, a Junior Cert student at Borris Vocational School, was killed after the car he was driving crashed into a wall near 'The Nine Stones,' Mount Leinster at around 5am yesterday.

He was pronounced dead at the scene.

His father, James, was jailed for three years last Friday for animal cruelty charges relating to a puppy farm, while his mother was given a suspended sentence.

There were four other teenage boys in the car at the time.

They were taken to St Luke's and Waterford University Hospitals for treatment.

One has been transferred to Dublin's Mater Hospital where he remains in a critical condition.

Borris Vocational School, where Eamonn Kavanagh was a Junior Cert student, is providing counselling to students.

Inspector Audrey Dormer from Carlow Garda Station is appealing for witnesses.

"The vehicle involved was a dark coloured Audi A4 saloon," she said.

"We are appealing to witnesses who may have seen that car up around the vicinity or in around Borris, Myshel or Bagnalstown over the course of the night.

"It was a tragic accident. You had the mid-term breaks last week and all of the schools and all the kids going back to school today and coming to face a very grave reality."
