A girl in her mid-teens is being treated for life-changing injuries after a carjacking in Kilkenny on Friday afternoon.

A man in his 30s, believed to be the driver of the stolen car, died in hospital after the car was crashed.

It collided with a vehicle carrying three adults, including a couple in their 40s and one of their fathers – a man in his 60s.

The three were treated in St Luke's General Hospital Kilkenny for non-life-threatening injuries.

It is believed that the girl was in the car alone momentarily while her father left to run an errand.

The car was stolen and driven at speed on the N77, where the collision then occurred.

"Deathtrap"

Fianna Fáil councillor in Kilkenny, Joe Malone says the stretch of road is dangerous and he's appealing for motorists to approach it with caution.

"I appeal to people to slow down", he said.

"It's so sad on the families involved and our thoughts and our prayers are with those families at this sad time."

He described the road that the incident occurred on as a "deathtrap".

"As a county councillor, we'll probably have to look at it now."
