4 Independent TDs are calling for emergency legislation to allow for the Children’s Referendum to be postponed.

It comes after the Supreme Court ruled that the government had spent public money putting out one sided information.

The Tánaiste says the referendum will go ahead as normal.

The government is under fire after the Supreme Court found today it has spent €1.1 million in taxpayers’ money putting out one-sided information in the referendum campaign.

This afternoon Mattie McGrath, Tom Flemming, Finian McGrath and Shane Ross have called for the referendum to be postponed.

Emergency legislation

Current legislation prevents a referendum from being delayed but the TDs argue it could still be done with emergency legislation.

But Tánaiste Gilmore says the court ruling does not damage the argument for a Yes vote and that the referendum will proceed on Saturday.

John Waters is a columnist with The Irish Times and The Mail on Sunday.

He has also been advocating a No vote in the referendum and gave his reaction to the Supreme Court ruling.
