A man has appeared in court charged with attacking a taxi driver with a corkscrew in Dublin. John Scully of Hazelcroft Gardens, Finglas is accused of dragging the driver from his cab before stabbing him repeatedly on Saturday night.

Gardaí described this alleged attack as "extremely violent" and totally "unprovoked".

The driver claims he picked up Mr Scully in the city centre and was instructed to head towards Finglas.

He says he was ordered to pull over at Royal Canal Avenue in Cabra and that when he did so, Mr Scully got out of the back and threatened to stab him if he did not get out of the cab.

He told them a fight then broke out and that Scully stabbed him several times in the right arm with a cork screw. The court was told that he was eventually restrained by a number of passersby who heard the driver's screams.

Mr Scully (30) was arrested at the scene and appeared in court this afternoon charged with assault causing harm.

He was refused bail and is due back in court on Thursday.
